This will produce large, smooth, 1-lb pinkish-red fruit, with a rich, sweet taste. This was developed in Logan, West Virginia by M.C. Byles, who spent 6 years crossing varieties and picking the best from the results. Its name comes from this process: during this time in the 1940s, he had sold plants for $1 each, eventually paying off the $6000 mortgage on his house, which gave the Mortgage Lifter its name once he was ready to introduce it to the market.

How often to water: 1 inch per week. If planted in a pot, because of how quickly potted tomato plants tend to dry out rapidly, this may need to be watered more frequently.

    Spacing: 24" apart

This can be planted in a pot or in the ground. Make sure to water on a regular schedule, because since these tomatoes are so large, they are vulnerable to cracking and splitting caused by uneven watering.
